If you have read my bio, you know that the person who most inspires me in life is my son.  He is only 19, yet he has been living his passion since a very young age.  Everything he needed has come to him when he needed it.  The first time I read “Think and Grow Rich” (Napoleon Hill), it was as if Mr. Hill was explaining to me the very philosophy that my son has been living his life by.  Yet, my son had no prior knowledge of Napoleon Hill’s works.  I was so intrigued by this philosophy, that I became a student of Napoleon Hill.  His teachings are entwined in almost every aspect of online marketing, including attraction marketing and social media.

The more well known teachings that we find inter-mingled throughout this industry include:

  • One must give value, before one can receive.
  • Create a Master Mind Group.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people.

Now, take a look at some of the quotes from another of his books, “The Master-Key to Riches”:

“I sought the path to riches the hard way before I learned there is a short and dependable path I could have followed had I been guided as I hope to guide you.”  Napoleon Hill himself is offering to be our mentor, coach and guide.  This quote relates the very foundation of many Internet marketers’ businesses.

“Economic security is not attained by the possession of money alone.  It is attained by the service one renders – for useful service may be converted into all forms of human needs, with or without the use of money.”  This could be tied into giving value, but here he is reminding us to ‘give back’.

Here’s another direct quote related to giving value:  “…the Master-Key to Riches enables its possessors to add to their own store of riches everything of value that they share with others.”  In other words, the value that you share comes back to you.

Here’s a couple of my favourites because they involve something that I am passionate about – learning.  “No one’s education is ever finished.” “… remain always a student and learn from every possible source.”

These two quotes inspired me to write this article:

“Social Alliances:  Here is a fertile, almost unlimited, field for the cultivation of friendly ‘contacts’.”  To be fair, Mr. Hill was not referring to the ‘social media’ as we know it today.  He was referring to the ‘old fashioned’ way of building social alliances such as dinner parties.  I know this seems a strange concept to you young people out there, but that was how we used to have to ‘connect’.  :)

“…daily practice to enlarge his or her personal contact list, that habit will be of great benefit in ways that cannot be predicted.”  Again, he wasn’t referring to a data base and autoresponders.  This list would have literally been a handwritten list and would most likely only contain a fraction of the numbers that we are able to attain today.  Even way back when, Napoleon Hill knew the value of the list!

There are many more examples of Mr. Hill’s teachings that can be found within the principles of the home business industry.  I don’t know if Napoleon Hill inspired these or the parallels exist because they are necessary for obtaining success.  It is like the chicken and the egg – which one came first?

Please leave your comments as I always enjoy your feedback.  What are your thoughts on the Think and Grow Rich Philosophy?

Wishing you great success!

  1. Napoleon Hill is ageless. His writings have been the foundation of almost every living motivational speaker today. Sounds like you have done a good job raising your 19 year old. I commend you. Great Post.

  2. Hi Wendy,

Think And Grow Rich got me started with personal development, along with Bob Proctor’s “Power To Have It All” CD series.

I enjoy Hill’s old school, no nonsense approach to development. I’ve had more than one “A Ha” moment when reading his works because his explanations are so clear and simple. Since his books are based on studying the mindsets of the most successful people in history it makes sense to heed his counsel.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful insight.

    • Thank you! I think Napoleon Hill was definitely successful in his quest to ‘educate’ us all. And he was absolutely right when he states that we have to be ready to hear the message. I love that his work has had such a profound effect on so many lives!! I can only hope to leave a legacy even remotely comparable to his.

  6. Hi Wendy,

great job on ‘translating’ N. Hill’s message into the world of the internet.

I recently heard that most of his books have had the secret edited out of it. There are unedited copies available.

On of the other meaning of Mastermind is connecting with the Universal Wisdom, when we tune into our Inner Being.
